INTRODUCTION

Weight loss surgery is a life-altering decision — one of the most important decisions a person will ever make. It carries the usual pain and risks of any major gastrointestinal surgical operation. Bariatric surgery may be offered to patients with severe obesity when medical treatments, including lifestyle changes of healthful eating and regular exercise, have not been effective.

The body mass index (BMI) is a standard way to define overweight, obesity, and morbid obesity. The BMI is calculated based on a person's height and weight—weight in kilograms ( 2.2 pounds per kilogram) divided by the square of height in meters ( 39.37 inches per meter). A BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight; 30 or more, obese; and 40 or more, morbidly obese. Bariatric surgery may be offered to patients with severe obesity when medical treatments, including lifestyle changes of healthful eating and regular exercise, have not been effective.

Weight loss surgery generally results in greater weight loss than conventional treatment, and leads to improvements in quality of life and obesity related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.[9]

There are several different types of bariatric weight loss surgical procedures, but they are known collectively as “bariatrics”.

Gastric Sleeve  or Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a new procedure that induces weight loss by restricting food intake. With the gastric sleeve, patients can eat what they want, just less. And there's another benefit: The part of the stomach that is removed contains the hormones that contribute to hunger. So taking that part out makes the patients less hungry.

With this procedure, the surgeon will remove approximately seventy percent of the stomach laparoscopically so that the stomach takes the shape of a tube or "sleeve". This procedure can be performed to patients who are 60 lbs or more overweight.

| Gastric Bypass
|

Gastric Bypass is the most common form of weight loss surgery because it results in reliable weight loss with acceptable risks and minimal side effects. In gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon staples off a large section of the stomach, leaving a tiny pouch. Patients simply can't eat as much as they did before surgery, because this small pouch can only accommodate a few ounces of food at a time, and they subsequently lose weight. Additionally, because most of the stomach and some of the small intestine has been bypassed, some of the nutrients and calories in your foods will not be absorbed. Appropriate candidates for this surgery are those who are 100 pounds or more overweight.
